Pastor Appreciation Month!

Did you know that October is Pastor Appreciation month?
What do you have planned for this month? How do you plan on honoring your Pastor?

Here is a great article I found in Today's Christian Magazine that I think we can all learn from. If you want to read the article in it's entirety you can visit the website article here. Otherwise, here is a quick list of those 8 things we can do to honor our Pastor:

  1. Cut the criticism
  2. Pray regularly
  3. Express appreciation in writing
  4. Use your skills to Bless
  5. Squelch gossip
  6. Offer to meet a need
  7. Be openly responsive
  8. Throw away the measuring stick

Of Course, I think we can apply these principles all year long!

I believe that Pastor's are under appreciated in many circumstances. They AND their families undergo amazing stress, criticism and attack. They are victims of spiritual warfare. Yet, somehow, they get back up the next day and are willing, nah, passionate about starting it all over again, so that people can find the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

That is simply amazing!

So, this next month, let me challenge you to do something amazing and spectacular for your Pastors!

It is the LEAST we can do!

AIDS, Music and more

Yesterday was one of those days. You know the kind of day I am talking about. You really can't wait for it to come you are so excited, then while it is here you are completely exhausted and can't wait for the day to end; lastly, once it is over you can't wait to do it again someday soon.

Now you know what I mean?

We had our services outdoors yesterday to accomodate the Step into Africa experience that has taken over our entire sanctuary. As Pastor Dave noted, we are the only church who was willing to use the sanctuary and displace its sunday service to accomodate the experience. Why? New Life believes that much in sharing this event with the world that it was worth the sacrifice.

In addition to outdoor services, we hosted a Staci Frenes concert last night. Staci is also a World Vision artist.

I was excited for this day. I couldn't wait. There is something about doing church as 1 service outdoors that is really cool. Yet, it made for a really long day. The first wave of us started showing up at about 6:30 to start building and assembling the stage, sound system, chairs, tents, etc. (after Eli spent all week prepping and repairing the system for sunday). After service it was time for a quick nap, lunch and then back to the church at 3:30 to start prepping for the concert.

After the concert, and thanks to a whole group of people who stayed to help, we cleared the stage in record time and I was heading home by 8:30.

The best part about it, is Jordan and I came back early (about 2:30) and him and I walked through the AIDS experience. Jordan and I got to spend the rest of the day together. We got to talk a bit about the experience. He got to run around with friends while I got ready for the concert, and then we went home together later. It was a great time together with my son.

It was a long day. I was totally exhausted. Yet, there was something special about the day that would make me want to do it all over again. How about you?

  • The weather will be great...the weather will be great...the weather will be great!
  • Did you know that Staci Frenes is doing a concert here on Sunday night? That will be fun!
  • Would it be crazy to pray for 20,000 people to come through the AIDS experience?
  • Maybe it is crazy to pray for that few of people!
  • I think the next 10 days is going to be an unbelievable time.
  • Baptisms in less than 2 weeks from now!
  • I am sure the stories will be amazing!

See ya on Sunday!

It's a Comin'...invite your friends now!

Do you remember last Christmas? Were you a part of our church last Christmas?

Well, it really doesn't matter. What matters is what you do this Christmas season.

NLCC will once again be performing the Christmas Concert, Behold the Lamb of God.

We started meeting this last week and it was exciting. We met in the Turlock Community Theatre yesterday, which is the site for this year's performance.

If you attended last year, you need to come back. It will move you again.

If you didn't attend last year, you had best make it a priority this year!

Lastly, bring and invite everyone you know, Christians and non alike. This is a show for everyone. I have a hunch it will be talked about throughout the town!

So, remember December 20th & 21st!

That is it for my plug!

Man I am excited. I can't wait for December to get here!

My Year through the Bible...Chased by a bear!

Have you ever been out in the woods, and came upon a bear? What did you do? Did you run? Did you hide? Did you freeze?

You can read on bear encounters all over the internet. Some say that you should make yourself appear as large as possible and make lots of noise so that it will scare the bear away. Others say that as long as you are downwind the bear can't smell you.

My solution is quite simple. If you are with other people, you run like heck! You don't have to be the fastest....just not the slowest!

Isn't that how we look at our Christian walk sometimes? Well, I know I could be doing better, but at least I am not as bad as that person. Well, at least I am not committing that sin!

Is that what God wants from us? To at least not be the worst sinner? Or does God want us to be the best we can be?

As I was reading through Amos, he writes in Chapter 5:

"Seek good, not evil, that you may live...Hate evil, love good..."

The Lord is calling us to do more than avoid sinning and at least be better than someone else. The Lord is calling us to seek Him out and to seek out good. To take an active and intentional role in our spiritual journeys.

So let me ask you today, are you content with not being the slowest one the bear is chasing? Or do you want to be the one who is chasing....chasing an ever greater relationship with Christ?

Jury Duty

Well, today I got to do my civic duty and serve on Jury Duty. I have not had to go to Jury Duty more than 1 time in the last 15 years, do to my law enforcement background.

I wasn't sure what to expect. Needless to say I was surprised. Did you know they have free wi-fi in the jury waiting room now? And a cafe! Man, I was unprepared.

So I found out that only one group was called (about 30 jurors) to finish filling the last 2 positions on a criminal jury trial that was going to last 2 weeks!

I wasn't ultimately selected (again, I think, because of my law enforcement background), which I was a bit bummed about. I have never been able to serve on a jury.

Then I heard about the case. A guy is accussed of walking up to another guy, threatening him and stealing his cell phone. Since he threatened the guy, it makes it robbery, a felony, instead of petty theft, a misdemeanor. If that wasn't enough, this occurred in 2005! What? Three years ago.

It is no wonder that our court system is so behind and screwed up. We are trying a simple case, which is going to take 2 1/2 weeks of the courts time, 3 years after the case. Who will ever remember anything?

So I am wondering, has any one of you served on jury duty recently? What did you think of the court system? Is it as backwards as my experience or am I alone on this?

Enjoy the comic below...I thought it was pretty funny!

A Big Kid!

Today I spent the day in the bay area.

My day started with a drive to Fremont, where a group of fleet managers toured the New Unite Motors Manufacturing Incorporated (NUMMI) Plant. This is a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors. Here they make sure vehicles as the Toyota Tacoma and Pontiac Vibe.

I have been on this tour before and to the plant many times, but it is still a fun place to visit and see the amazing process of building a vehicle.

Following this, we drove to The Great Mall in Milpitas where we had lunch at Dave & Buster's.

What is D&B? Imagine a Chuck E. Cheese with a full bar and great food. That is D&B.

All in all, a fun day of "work" but the day has ended and I am spent. The best part....

I have jury duty tomorrow! Can't wait!

Usher Team worked overtime!

I don't have the final count as of the writting of this blog, but I would bet our attendance was well over 1000-1100 this last Sunday.

Why do I bring that up?

Our Ushers did an amazing job of packing out our sanctuary BOTH services. They were running around finding seats so people could sit with their families, friends could sit with their guests, and as best as possible find a spot for everyone.

In addition, the church threw them a curve. All on the same Sunday, we changed how we did communion this week, we added a reverse offering, still took a regular offering, and saw record crowds.

The ushers handled all of this, with out blinking an eye. They did an amazing job!

In fact, once I got out of there way, they were able to roll with the punches, and didn't miss a que. They were ready at every step of the way and if you didn't notice them in the back running around, then they did exactly what they are supposed to do.

Thank you ushers for an amazing job!

Jason

Worship no other Gods

It is that time of year. Like many other Americans, we begin a period of time in our lives where we choose to worship another god.

It is soccer season.

Ok, so we really don't worship another god. However, it sure does seem like it sometimes.

Youth sports can (and do) at times control your life. We have two boys in youth soccer. We have practices two days a week, and starting in September we have two games every Saturday until mid-November. They only way for us to get away during this time is to skip a game or practice.

We have friends who are doing pee-wee football and others who do competitive baseball. These teams are practicing 5-6 days a week, on weekends and weekdays. They go to tournaments that last the entire weekend. It is crazy.

Why do we do this?

We love our children. We want to see them active in sports. We want them to learn how to win and lose. We want them to build teamwork habits. The list can go on and on why we do what we do. Nonetheless, we do it.

Did you know that God does the same thing for us?

The list goes on and on as to why God does what he does. In fact, the list is so great we can never understand it. The most important is this. God loves us and wants to see our lives filled with joy as we follow Him.

He will go to as many practices, games, tournaments and picture days that it takes to see us follow Him and receive the greatest joy possible.

So for those of you who are about to embark on this same stressful journey as us...just remember, God is willing to do so much more for us!

Ummm...does WOW describe it?

Wow!

Amazing!

Unbelievable!

Any of these words could describe the services this morning. I am not sure that any one of them would do a great job of describing just how amazing the services were.

How would you describe them?

Well, the secret is out and if you were not there today, you missed out!

A few weeks ago we gave out everyone an I-phone (if you weren't there then ask some who was all about it!).

Today, we gave out cold hard cash! That is right. Benjamins. Dineros!

So, here is the BIG question. What and how are you going to use your seed to make an impACT in the community?

Make sure and share your story on the cards that were included, or email impact@newlifecc.com.

If you feel so inclined....I would love to hear some stories as well and post them here!

If you missed today...boy, I sure hope you don't plan on missing another service, because you are really missing out!

Happy Birthday

Today I celebrate my birthday.
I am older than some and younger than others.

As I chase after the age of wisdom
I realize that wisdom is moving faster than me.

As people age their eye sight gets worse
looking in the mirror, I understand why.

Join me in celebrating this momentous day
and together....oooh look at the cute birdie.

What was I blogging about?
The memory is getting worse every day!

Really, I want to tell you.

I can tell you this:

It is going to be huge!

Man, how I want to tell you!

I probably shouldn't but let me say this:

It will blow your mind!

Now, I have said too much.

I can't believe you got that out of me.

Well, I might as well tell you the rest:

You will be speechless!

Did you know that Sunday is my birthday?

This is going to way bigger than that.

Now you know it is going to be amazing.

What the heck am I talking about?

Come Sunday, September 7

9:00 or 10:45
and you will find out.

See ya there!
